RICE CROP.

The world can expect another record crop of rice totaling 640 million tons, equivalent to 434 million tons of the elaborate grain, according to a report from Uruguay’s Rice Planters Association.

However global consumption is estimated to drop slightly below production, given the diet changes in many of the emerging economies.

Rice prices reached a historic US$949 a ton in May of this year in Thailand, although it has since dropped but not in proportion to the drop in the prices of wheat, corn and soy.

In November 2008 Thailand white rice increased 9% to US$580 a ton, with the support of a government plan, of the government buying the husk rice at US$342.90 a ton, to assist farmers and an intervention plan at US$640 a ton for the good rice is now in place.


In Vietnam the worlds leading rice exporter, the sale was closed last week of 100,000 tons for Malaysia at US$425 per tom FOB port of exit.
