URUGUAY

PLANS FOR SOY.

The government of Uruguay, is planning to implement a program of permit requests for the sowing of soybeans in the coming season, as part of a plan for the conservation of the soil, sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.

The plan has been criticized by many farmers, as a plan to control the expansion of soy production, over that of wheat and barley.

Farmers organizations pointed out, that 40pc of the land in Uruguay is leased out to foreign investors, who are primarily interested in the soy crop.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Andres Berterreche, stated the government were concerned about erosion and the plan may be spread to other crops.
