Veg Oil services fuel FWAG curiosity

A York-based bio-fuels firm recently hosted a very successful visit from almost fifty members of the Farming Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG).

Veg Oil Services (VOS), established by farming father and son Peter and Michael Rhodes two years ago, welcomed the group to their 700-acre farm at Storwood and showcased the innovative technologies aimed at agricultural bio-diesel production.

Following a presentation by Peter on the methods of crushing, the party then received a talk from David Abbott of Green Fuels on the conversion of oil into bio-diesel.

Established in 1969, FWAG - an independent Registered Charity - assists the people who manage the countryside with environmental management expertise, so food produced in the UK , our countryside and the native wildlife as we know it can be improved and protected for our future generations to enjoy.

Martin Phillips of FWAG explained: "There are a number of issues associated with bio fuels and the way it can impact on food production but from a farming point of view small scale production facilities such as those at Storwood represent a good route forward in these days of soaring diesel prices.

"Not only is it an additional potential revenue stream but it also gives some degree of fuel security to cover any possible interruption to fuel supplies that could affect the working of the farm.

"The talks were fascinating and the 'can do' attitude of people like Peter and Michael at Veg Oil Services is a lesson for the farming sector," added Martin who is the Farm Conservation Adviser for East Yorkshire.

Peter Rhodes of VOS commented: "We were delighted to host FWAG and the feedback was all positive. Over the last few years we've developed and evolved our processes and feel that there is a very positive story to be told.

"Small scale farm-based bio diesel production presents no threat to food production and plays a big part in keeping the UK's farms running cost effectively and efficiently," added Peter.
