WA growers worry about eastern GM ban lift

A Western Australian farmers group is concerned a planned trial to grow genetically modified (GM) canola in the south coast region may not go ahead because two eastern state governments have lifted the GM ban.

Yesterday the New South Wales and Victorian Governments lifted their bans but Agriculture Minister Kim Chance says WA will not be reviewing its moratorium on GM crops.

The South East Premium Wheat and Barley Growers Association president, Chris Reichstein, says the focus of GM crops will now be in New South Wales and Victoria.
