Woodfuel seminar shows where there’s wood, there’s brass

A FREE event later this month aims to offer an insight into the emerging market for fuel that grows as trees.

The one-day Woodfuel Supply and Installation Seminar, on Tuesday, March 16, will provide a comprehensive overview of the developing market for woodfuel across the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Organised by White Rose Forest and South Yorkshire Forest Partnership, the event at Denton Hall, near Ilkley, is aimed at famers, estate owners and managers, land agents, tree surgeons and others involved in forestry and tree services – as well as all businesses, organisations and individuals considering a woodfuel installation.

Experts from South Yorkshire Forest Partnership, the Forestry Commission, hosts NG Bailey, CO2Sense and White Rose Forest will share their knowledge and experience.

Subjects for discussion at the event – held at Denton Hall, near Ilkley – will include:

• how the woodfuel market is developing in Yorkshire and Humber – and why;

• how delegates can benefit from these changes;

• woodland management processes, costs and funding available to support delegates’ plans;

• different business models delegates can use to enter the woodfuel market, and funding streams available to help with capital costs;

• woodfuel installation options and available incentives and funding for boiler installations.

The event will also include a tour of a small-scale district heating scheme that is fuelled by woodchip, as well as a chipping demonstration and plenty of networking opportunities.

WHY WOODFUEL?

Yorkshire & the Humber has 92,082 hectares(ha) of woodland – six per cent of the region’s total land cover. The Forestry Commission manages 19,847ha, of which 89% is coniferous and 11% broadleaf. The remaining 70,280ha is under private or local authority ownership.

About 50% of these non-FC woodlands are currently undermanaged – they could supply tens of thousands of tonnes of biomass each year to the local market, giving the region a great opportunity to bring its woodlands back into management, with the associated improvements in biodiversity, CO2 emission cuts and job creation.
