First Pernilla sugar beet to be lifted

Spilling over grower David Hill's concrete pad is the first commercial crop to be lifted in the UK of Nickerson's sugar beet, Pernilla. The crop was drilled on April 22nd this year at RW Hill Farms near Thetford.

Mr Hill says that the establishment was excellent and lifting easy. "The pad has never been filled from this fifty acre field before, so I'm very encouraged by the yield and looking forward to seeing the beet returns when the crop is delivered to the local factory next week."

Pernilla is a newly recommended, very high yielding diploid variety with high sugar content and a low level of impurities and amino nitrogen. This is combined with good establishment, a low level of bolters and the best disease resistance available.
