New sequences and mixes announced for Starane XL

Dow AgroSciences has gained approval for a new range of tank mixtures and sequences for its herbicide Starane XL which will give cereal growers greater flexibility to tackle a wide range of grass and broad-leaved weeds in spring 2005.

The new recommendations allow for Starane XL (containing fluroxypyr and florasulam) or Boxer (containing florasulam) to be used either as a tank mix or in sequence with: Atlantis WG (mesosulfuron-methyl+isosulfuron-methyl sodium); or DP944 or DP945 (both formulations of flupyrsulfuron-methyl+picolinafen). These are in addition to an extensive range already on the label of both products.

As a result growers can achieve comprehensive, effective control of a very broad range of grass and broad-leaved weeds including cleavers.

Dow AgroSciences points out that only one other product with an ALS-inhibitor mode of action can be applied to a crop that has been treated with Starane XL or Boxer.

When either product, containing florasulam, is applied in a sequence or tank mixture there are no additional following crop restrictions or cultivation requirements over and above those on either product label, except when the sequence or tank mix includes DP 928, Finish PX or Harmony M. In these instances, only cereals or grass can be sown in the following autumn.

"The new recommendations will enable growers to devise weed control programmes that will allow them to couple the outstanding control of cleavers and other broad-leaved weeds offered by Starane XL or Boxer with the grassweed control of other ALS-inhibitor products," said Dow AgroSciences Marketing Specialist James Knight. "In addition, with the timing flexibility offered by Boxer and Starane XL, there is scope to handle early aggressive weed competition, or a late flush."
