Signum raises standards for chocolate spot control

Chocolate spot symptoms have already been reported in some crops and the current humid conditions are likely to encourage rapid development of early infection. "Fungicide treatments for chocolate spot are protectant in their activity and so it is important to keep a close eye on crop symptoms and be prepared to act quickly," says John Young, BASF Peas and Beans Product Manager.

Signum, approved last year for the control of chocolate spot and rust, has raised the standards for disease protection in both winter and spring field beans, according to BASF. Signum (containing pyraclostrobin and boscalid), has been seen as a significant breakthrough in the protection against the two major diseases in field beans, chocolate spot and rust. It offers superior disease control and greater persistence compared to other protectant fungicides.

BASF advise Signum at early flowering for protectant control of chocolate spot and rust in winter beans. With its broad-spectrum disease control and its ever-widening crop recommendations, including Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, lettuce, strawberries, spring and winter beans, Signum is a useful chemical to keep in stock.

Rust can often become a threat towards the end of flowering, or there can be early signs of rust activity in the crop at this time. "In this case, completing the spray programme with Caramba or Sunorg Pro fits the bill because of their stronger curative activity on rust", advises John. MORE…………..

Signum contains 67 g/kg pyraclostrobin and 267 g/kg boscalid and is formulated as a water dispersible granule. It will control Botrytis fabae (chocolate spot), Botrytis cinerea and Uromyces fabae (rust) in winter and spring field beans. Up to two applications can be made with a harvest interval of 21 days. In addition to spring and winter field beans, Signum is also approved for use in outdoor and protected strawberries, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots and outdoor and protected lettuce plus a wide range of SOLAs.

Caramba contains 60 g/l metconazole and Sunorg Pro contains 90 g/l metconazole. They control rust in field beans as well as Mycosphaerella pinodes, Ascochyta pisi and Botrytis in combining peas, vining peas and lupins at a dose rate of 1.2 l/ha of Caramba and 0.8 l/ha of Sunorg Pro. Up to two applications can be made with a harvest interval of 14 days.
