Surefill shortage threatens Nemathorin supplies

Failure to return reusable Nemathorin packaging could result in delays in supply or unavailability of the nematicide in the spring, warns Garth Bretherton of Syngenta. Virtually all Nemathorin is now supplied in convenient and safe to handle 20kg Surefill containers, but only around three-quarters of the containers sent out last year have been returned.

"Reusable packaging is a costly extra in the production process, compared to conventional disposable bags and boxes, but Surefill containers have major advantages for operators, reduce the risk of environmental pollution and eliminate waste," according to Mr Bretherton. Following a significant increase in Nemathorin use last season, thousands of containers are still sitting out on farms.

With Nemathorin applied at 30 kg/ha for PCN control, or 15 kg/ha for wireworm, a grower with 50 hectares of potatoes could accumulate up to 75 Surefill containers.

Syngenta is appealing to any growers with Surefill containers on farm to contact their distributor, from where Syngenta will arrange collection, cleaning and refilling ready for next season. Providing containers are returned promptly, there will be no problem with Nemathorin supplies, added Mr Bretherton.
