Aldi to review pesticide use after concern from environmentalists

Discount supermarket Aldi UK has said it is reviewing its policy on pesticide use on produce after environmental campaigners raised concerns about its impact on bees.

Environmental group Friends of the Earth said it has been pushing the retailer to follow its German counterpart and welcomed the news of its review.

"The aim of this review is to establish an Aldi UK position on pesticide usage that will take our approach beyond the status quo, particularly in relation to pollinators," Aldi UK said in a statement.

FoE bees campaigner Dave Timms said: "This review is welcome but Aldi's new policy must include a strong commitment to keep neonicotinoid pesticides out of the production of its fruit, vegetables and cereals. It's vital that consumers let Aldi know that they expect them to act to protect our threatened bees."

German parent company, Aldi Sud, recently banned suppliers from using eight pesticides in its fruit and vegetable supply chain, which are produced for the German market.
