In a bid of fight food shortage and improve food security, Southern African country Mozambique plans to import rice from Vietnam.
The country's senior government official said Thursday Mozambique will be importing 1.2 million tonnes of rice over the next three years from Vietnam which is one of the leading rice producing countries.
According to Minister of Trade and Industry Antonio Fernando, the Southern African nation which is working hard to put its economy back into shape said they country would be getting 400,000 tonnes of rice a year.
He however could not be drawn to reveal the price for the rice importation within the three years saying this was being discussed between the country's importing companies and Vietnamese authorities.
A Reuters report Thursday quoted the Mozambican Trade Minister saying Vietnam has also pledged to continue exporting more rice.
"As a government, we have done our part, and now the Mozambican companies should sit down with the Vietnamese and negotiate the prices," said Fernando.
