Greenvale AP and Tesco are celebrating the success of their three-week initiative of local produce, which saw potatoes being taken direct from the field to the store.

This meant potatoes were instore within hours of being picked from the fields.

The initiative, which started on Monday June 16, saw select Tesco stores around Edinburgh receive potatoes from Luffness Mains, Aberlady, East Lothian.

This was piloted last year at a handful of stores, and now thanks to its popularity with customers was rolled out across Edinburgh.

The stores which received the fresh potatoes were the Corstorphine Extra, Dalkeith Harden Road, Broughton Road, Colinton, Haddington, Musselburgh, North Berwick, South Queensferry, Westerhailes and Penicuik.

The scheme was the result of work between the grower and Greenvale AP working with the Tesco Scottish Office to deliver more local and seasonal products to stores around Scotland.

Customers were able to identify Greenvale's new season potatoes from the in store signage which informed them of the origin of the potatoes.

Greenvale General Manager Doug Bell said: "Customers have been loving the new potatoes and the initiative, that started as a pilot last year, has now cemented itself into the calendar. We will be working with everyone involved to look into ways of extending the project next season.

"The potatoes were picked and harvested at the farm and then went straight to the store, taking only take a matter of hours for potatoes to go from ground to grocery basket.

"The whole point of new season potatoes is to get them as fresh as you possibly can and you can't get much fresher than this way."

Angus Bell of Tesco's Scottish office commented: "Scottish new season potatoes are always eagerly awaited by Tesco customers and this was a fantastic way to celebrate the start of the new season in East Lothian.

"We recognise seasonality and regionality are hugely important to our customers and potatoes are a fantastic example of this.

"This popular initiative helps to recognise not only the importance of new potato season crop but also raises awareness of the delicious local produce available."

The Stevenson family have been growing potatoes at Luffness Mains for more than 95 years.

Farmer Allan Stevenson said: "There is a growing public demand for locally sourced, seasonal produce. We, with Tesco, are responding to this in providing Scottish bred and grown potatoes direct from Luffness Mains to our local Tesco stores."
