Easier crop monitoring for carrot and parsnip grower

A fully revised guide by AHDB Horticulture, developed to benefit carrot and parsnip growers during their crop monitoring, will land with businesses in the New Year.

The Crop Walkers’ Guide for carrots and parsnips has been revised by a number of expert researchers, consultants and growers, and has been designed specifically as an aid to monitoring pest and disease in the field and in store. It illustrates and describes the important pests, diseases, nutritional and physiological disorders which may be encountered during the crop production process, with the aim being to assist with early detection.

The guide, which replaces the previous version produced in 2011 is in a new format, easier to carry and includes new advances in crop science resulting from AHDB funded research. The virus section reflects these advances in knowledge and has been completely revised. In addition the disease section has been made more ‘user friendly’ with sections ordered according to causes, whether bacterial, fungal, oomycete, or a minor or emerging disease.

Dawn Teverson, the Research and Knowledge Exchange Manager at AHDB Horticulture responsible for producing the guide said, “Our Crop Walker Guides have long been popular with growers when crop monitoring out in the field. New research and insights into pests and diseases now mean that we know more about the problems that occur in carrots and parsnips, and users of the guide will benefit from this new information.”
