North East farmers top of the crops

FARMERS in the North East have weathered the storm and had a successful harvest despite torrid conditions, say local experts.

Abnormal weather has destroyed crops, ruined many harvests and cost the farming industry millions. The National Farmers' Union said that the North East had been the most severely affected area after steady rain and only short dry spells.

However, careful preparation in the region has meant that many harvests have survived and against the odds, profits have been made.

Stephen Torgersen, farming specialist and managing partner at UHY Torgersens, accountants in Sunderland, said:

"Despite having lost most of August due to appalling weather conditions, modern technology and hard work has meant that much of the harvest in the region has been salvaged".

The North East contains all forms of agricultural productions and contributes between 2 - 3% of gross domestic product (GDP). With over one million hectares, the area is home to over 4 million sheep, 10 million chickens and 25% of English beef cattle.
