Space Technology helps Norfolk Farmers plus FREE mapping service

Law Fertilisers, the independent fertiliser company supplying farmers in Norfolk, is utilising NASA space technology to improve the use of fertilisers on farm. The company uses satellite sensing to locate and identify areas within individual fields that may vary either due to soil type changes or previous field boundaries. It has incorporated a sophisticated system that varies the rate of fertiliser on its own spreaders travelling across the field, even at up to 20 mph.

Mark Law, Managing Director of Law Fertilisers says "This can save up to £80/acre by not applying fertilisers where soil fertility is high. And with crop values currently at good levels, the same technology can be used to boost yields at harvest and improve margins by identifying where deficient areas would benefit from increased fertiliser use. This could result in a potential benefit of between £100-150/acre."

"Many of the latest combine harvesters now have the ability to measure crop yields during harvest and so create a "yield" map. Law's can utilise these maps and integrate them together with the soil nutrient maps, applying space-age technology with regard to nutrient management and with the intention of optimising yields and improving returns," explains Mark.

Laws will have a working demonstration of this technology on their stand at the Royal Norfolk Show (Stand No. 285) on the 25-26th June 2008 and are offering a FREE mapping service for a 20-acre field to farmers who attend their stand on the day.
